Standard Deviant is a heartfelt band from Eugene, OR consisting of Connor Dean (vocals, guitar), Avery Powell (bass), and Chris Vahle (drums). What began as a part-time project between Connor and Chris in 2019, Standard Deviant organically evolved into something more. Their initial endeavor to play 90’s and early 00’s pop-punk covers with no real intent, ultimately culminated into the recording of a 7-song concept album “No Place, Like Home” in summer 2022. Live shows have followed, but sporadically, given Chris’s geographical relocation. Despite these setbacks and life obligations which slow their progress as an active band, each step forward has increased their dedication. They remain excited and driven as they continue toward the future.
Their sound is informed much by Connor’s strong influences of punk-adjacent sub-genres circa 2000. The band personally likes to describe themselves with one succinct phrase: Aesthetically emo, punk in ethos. However, most others seem to just compare them to Jimmy Eat World.
Connor's songwriting displays a range of style and emotion which patently discloses an authentic sincerity that makes it seem as unique as it is familiar. And with Avery’s keen and tasteful knowledge of harmony and rhythm, the drums and bass expertly bridge all the gaps within the sonic space of this trio. Their power—driving but delicate—draws the listener in and invokes a captivating hope-from-darkness sentiment around which the lyrics also tend to revolve.
Currently they are writing material for their second album.
